Drywall

What are advantages of using drywall?

Drywall is a very popular and durable wall covering that has been in use since the 1800s. It is available in numerous colors and styles, making it perfect for people with a range of tastes. Drywall is lightweight and easy to install, so it can be used as an accent wall or as the entire exterior side of a building. It can be ripped down at the end of each year, which makes it easy to switch up your living room decor every season.

Identify the type of system that will be used in the project

Walls – vertical system that completely replaces the closing of walls in conventional masonry. It is worth remembering that all Drywall walls are oriented to always be installed floor/slab.

Cladding – a vertical system normally used to increase the acoustic insulation of a conventional masonry wall system in order to meet performance standards or to close columns or shafts (ducts through which the main water/sewage and sometimes electricity pipes pass)

Ceilings – horizontal system used for closing ceilings/recesses or finishes. Often used in bathrooms that have sewage ducts installed below the slab in the neighbor’s environment (lower floor).

Removable Ceilings – horizontal system used to facilitate access to the ceiling (free area between the slab and the ceiling/plate) used mainly by maintenance professionals.

Drywall Board Models

Drywall (ST) – White, or gray, is the drywall board suitable for general use in dry areas. Generally used in walls and ceilings, it is recommended for rooms, offices, and other environments that need division or thermoacoustic insulation of the drywall system.

Drywall (RU) – For application in damp areas, such as kitchens, bathrooms, washrooms, laundry rooms or service areas, the use of green drywall board, resistant to moisture, is indicated. This type of board has in its chemical composition water-repellent components, which protect the surface against splashes and moisture. However, the material is not waterproof, and should not be used in ceilings, saunas and swimming pools, as the humidity in these spaces is constant.

Drywall (RF) – The pink drywall gypsum board has the presence of fiberglass in its composition, a factor that guarantees greater resistance to fire and heat. For this reason, they are very suitable for emergency exits, enclosed stairs and environments with risk of fire.

Due to fiberglass’s help in increasing fire resistance, pink drywall board is more effective in protection and safety than standard boards, including meeting the requirements of the Performance Standard.

Identify The Expected Performance Of The Drywall System

At this stage, the professional must identify the performance expected by the drywall system: just divide environments, offer acoustic protection, radiological shielding, fire resistance or others.

From this step, it is already possible to analyze the technical and performance characteristics of the drywall systems offered by the manufacturers to more adequately specify the ideal system for your project.
